STIEG LARSSON, 1954-2004

Before his career as a writer, Stieg Larsson was mostly known for his struggle against racism and right-wing extremism. Starting in the late 1970's, he combined his work as a graphic designer with holding lectures on right-wing extremism for Scotland Yard. During the following years he became an expert on the subject and held many lectures as well as writing many novels on the subject. In 1995, when 8 people were killed by neo-Nazis in Sweden, he was the main force behind the founding of the Expo-foundation, a group intended on exposing neo-Nazi activity in Sweden. From 1999 onwards he was appointed chief editor of the magazine Expo.

During the last 15 years of his life, he and his life companion Eva Gabrielsson lived under constant threat from right-wing violence.

The trilogy

Millennium trilogy

Stieg Larsson had always been interested in detective novels, and he was very familiar the works of Elizabeth George and Minette Walters. I have just finished reading THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE. The fight scene was one of the best written pieces if literature I've ever read. I have read a lot and have even written seceral books myself. If only I could write like that maybe someday I could make a living of it. I can't wait to start reading THE GIRL WHO KICKED THE HORNET'S NEST. Got it today.

I wonder about Larsson's personal involvement in the communist party yet his aversion to neo-naziis. I guess I am uneducated about the communist party as being an American, there is nothing positive said about it.

- Cathy, 12 April 2012

A lot of Americans seem to get confused on

The topic of communism and Nazism as the

education about them seems poor but

They are exact opposites of each other,

In Nazism (right wing) one group of people are superior

To others and the countries resources are used

To benefit that specific group only, whereas in

Communism (left wing) everyone is equal and resources

Are shared according to need. This is where the

Terms right and left wing come from, meaning policies

Leaning right (conservative) or left (socialist). Sadly in the USA

There seems to be so much propaganda that people

Don't really understand, eg the health care reforms where

Socialised health care like we have in the uk was demonised

By out right lying and myths about non existent "death panels" etc by right wing Parties opposed to reform. Anyway apologies for the long answer

And hope it helped explain a bit.

- Chris, 25 April 2012

There's no need trying to simplify basic left and right thinking to a bunch of red necks, but I admire you for trying.

- jayne, 1 May 2012

'communism'- basically what Obama is trying to do to the U.S....btw we are not 'a bunch of red necks' and he will not succeed.

I saw the America version movie Girl With the Dragon Tattoo first and was delighted to then have the book trilogy offered to me me. The first book was a little slow to start but having seen the film I wanted the nuances missed on celluloid. Once past the first 200 pages the story began to heat up and I was hooked. The second book was hotter and I could not put it down, the third book, I was gripped from the first line, was a pacey furnace. Absolutely loved the plot, sub-plots and characters. Can't wait for the next two movies to be released.

- Turea Spencer Portugal, 15 Mars 2012

The two last movies of the trilogy have been made in 2009. They are on movie channels here in Australia. In fact, they are all three playing this week. The Sewdish verson, that is. Even with the subtitles they are excellent and gripping movies.

WOW, my whole life was put on hold until I finished reading "The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo" and immediatel started on the second book. I literally lived in the book - could feel the cold he felt when he lived with the Vangers in north Sweden. I have people lined up to borrow all three of my books by Stieg Larsson. So sorry he has died, but hope he can look down and see how appreciated his writing is. But his message is so clear and how much empathy he has for women and their needs. I LOVE HIM.

- Valerie T./USA, 7 Mars 2012

The best three books that I have ever read. Wish there were more to come.
