"Tattoo" filming Oct 2010

"The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" is Fincher's next film.

the English-language version is being produced by Scott Rudin at Sony with Steve Zaillian ("Moneyball") currently writing the script

Carey Mulligan the lead role of Lisbeth Salander

Posted by l_rivers i Cottage Grove OR , 1 April 2010

Actually, I have heard David Fincher didn't want her to be Lisbeth. He was looking for an unknown star. Sony and the script writer were those vying for Mulligan.

I HEARD GEORGE CLOONEY

IS PLAYING THE MALE PROTAGANIST

I HOPE NOT!

SAW THE SWEDISH VERSION OF "GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO"

CATCH IT IF YOU CAN GREAT!

Posted by , 19 April 2010

I don't see how these books can be "Americanized". Much of the stories concern Swedish laws and the rights of the press. They are not the same in American and so the stories will have to be radically changed. If the new movies will take place in Sweden, why bother. The Swedish movies have already been made. Don't reinvent the wheel. It will be like the remakes of classic movies that never turn out as good as the original.

Posted by KL in Utah, USA , 22 April 2010

the movies are only in the landmark theathers in the usa. most of the people who read the US books most likely wont be able to see it because

A. they didnt know about it

B. there is not that many landmark theaters and i doubt anyone is going to drive 4 or 5 hours to see the movie.

C. it could open up the series to even more people. the only thing i knew about this book series was that it was an internatial best seller when my mom -i'm 13- dragged me out to see this movie -she lived in sweeden for 2 years durning collage and says i need more cultural exposer- and the movie was what made me start reading the books. i saw it yesterday and am now reading the second book because i really want to know what happens next, i'll eventually re-read the series in a month or two form book one-three once book three comes out.

Posted by juicy couture girl , 22 April 2010

Can't they just release the Swedish movie here in the US with English subtitles? I think the Swede version & characters are perfect in itself.

Posted by Gwenh in Miami, Fl , 1 May 2010

I'm not familiar with Carey Mulligan, but I had actually read that Kristin Stewart was a frontrunner for the role of Lisbeth. That would be horrible. I saw the Swedish version and have read the 3 novles and am glad that I did before the American film would have ruined the original story for me.

Posted by James in Austin, TX , 3 May 2010

The Swedish film is great. Why not just make it widely available throughout the US? Moviemakers think the American public is too lazy to read subtitles, but this movie could prove them wrong...

Posted by Nancy Gallagher in Pasadena, CA , 3 May 2010

I just saw the Swedish movie version today & it was more than I could hope for. I want to see it again! I'm so happy I found a nearby theater showing this film which is just a very happy coincident...

Anyhow, please don't let Kristen Stewart or Carey Mulligan play Lisbeth's part. It wouldn't do any justice at all to the character. Noomi Rapace is perfect for this! I totally agree with Nancy G., they should just make it widely available throughout US. Remaking this would be a disaster! I could almost see it tanked now in the box office.

Posted by Gwenh in Miami, FL , 6 May 2010

I understand Noomi speaks fluent english. So...................

Posted by G R in Chicago , 7 May 2010

I didn't hate the movie, but Lisbeth is the heart of the books; someone I really wanted to meet. In the movie she was mostly an undeveloped character who bared little resemblance, physically or otherwise, to Lisbeth in the book, and certainly was not the central figure. Very disappointing. The U.S. version will be much worse; probably concentrating on high tech computer stuff, with an equally shallow Lisbeth character.

Posted by Richard in Denver , 16 May 2010

The only good movies from books lately have been dennis lehane, and they are good movies, but not the same experience as the books. Check Shooter, others. I don't think my imagination could stand the affront of someone else's idea of lisbeth. Or Jack Reacher, which is bound to happen.

Posted by sgpatien in livermore, ca , 16 May 2010

I can't see why we would need an "American" version. The first film was great and the actress, Noomi Rapace, perfect for the role.

The only person I could see playing the role in an American version would be the singer Pink. Seriously I think she could do the dark bit really well.

Still I say why remake what seems to be an already great film.

Posted by hypathiausa in Bellevue, WA , 17 May 2010

Agreed with not needing the Americanized version. I can't see the book being translated well into the american version ? that would really botched up the entire story.

And the choice of the actresses lined up so far won't be able to live up to the character. Noomi did a really great job. Kristin Stewart? Gotta be joking, she can barely pull off Bella in Twilight series. Her as Salander? Disaster.

Posted by komodo in vancouver , 17 May 2010

I'm an American and I wouldn't want to see an Americanized version. The last I heard, Brad Pitt is to play Blomkvist. If that's the case, then I'm sure it would be a multi-million dollar film with plenty of "high gloss" which I am also sure would not do justice to the plot or it's characters. I do look forward to future Swedish versions with the current individuals in their respective roles. Any other version would not be the same.

Walt, in Canton, you hit it head on!

Posted by judy in mansfield,oh , 21 May 2010

I heard Ellen Page is also in the running and if I have to pick anyone from our limited pool, I would pick her. I've seen her in Hard Candy where she plays a violent revenge seeking 14 year old and I think she can pull off Lisbeth. Yet, Noomi did a fantastic job; her shoes would be hard to fill for any actress.

Posted by mags in New York , 23 May 2010

Read the book, saw the movie and like others I do not see a reason for an American version. If there is to be one then I unlike others I think George Clooney would be perfect to play Blomkvist. Under no circumstances should Brad Pitt (who I think is a good actor) play Blomkvist. I still have not determined who could play Lisbeth but definitely not Stewart or Mulligan.

Posted by Jim F in Minnesota , 23 May 2010

Ug. What is it about remaking "foreign" flicks for the American market? Look at what they did with "Death At A Funeral," to name but a few. Maybe it's because American's are too illiterate to read the sub-titles?

Posted by Bleh in California , 24 May 2010

If they remake this in the US, I hope they keep the setting as Sweden. Just like Ancient Romans always have British accents, these Swedes could just speak with American accents. There is no way they can move the story to the US and be true to the characters--Mikael Blomkvist is uniquely European (he'd be considered an immoral pig for his sex life alone in the US).

I see Johnny Depp in this role because he is a strong male lead who isn't macho. George Clooney is far too macho for this character.

Kristen Stewart has the right look, but she has a tendency to overact and I think the role of Lisbeth needs to go to someone much subtler. Mulligan would be great, but she just doesn't look the part to me. I can see Ellen Page doing it.

Posted by Nancy in Vancouver , 29 May 2010

on the plus side: David Fincher. i think he has done some amazing work.

on the scary side: everything else! i DO hope that they at least keep the story in Sweden. if they americanize it, it will become something COMPLETELY different and unrecognizable!

as for casting... no CLUE on who should play Lisbeth. as for Blomkvist, i actually could picture clooney or pitt. (pitt is OLDER now; he isn't the pretty boy he was 20 years ago! and he has done some of his best work with Fincher.)

guess time alone will tell.

(and oh, LOVED the Swedish film of Dragon Tattoo!)

Posted by bradeleine in los angeles , 29 May 2010

I think a young Tilda Sinton would have made the perfect Lisbeth Salandar.

Posted by LL in New York , 1 June 2010

Jodie Foster! She would be perfect - don't look at her age, look at her, her eyes, and the whole package. She is also very athletic. I think Clooney would be perfect.

Posted by Dee in Plantation, FL , 2 June 2010

i was lucky enough to see the original swedish film for Girl.. (actually, it was called men who hate women in the subtitles) and i'm concerned as to how hollywood is going to treat it, especially if brad pitt is in the lead (what are they hoping for? to get angelina to play lisbeth?) let noomi play lisbeth if you have to remake it hollywood and if you really feel the need to replace michael nyqvist, how about viggo mortesen?

Posted by traci-ann in boston , 2 June 2010

The swedish version with english subtitles ~ GWTDT

was excellent!

Hollywood is going to F**k it up

Posted by aj in boston , 2 June 2010

The Swedish version of TGWTDT was fantastic. It's in limited release in the Seattle area and I highly recommend it for anyone who's a fan of the book series. I will miss these characters when I'm finished with the third book.

Posted by Jillayne Schlicke in Edmonds, Washington State, USA , 3 June 2010

Daniel Craig (James Bond) is the hottest name to play Blomkvist in the new film.

Posted by Leo in Stockholm , 4 June 2010

Thank God for Netflix - anyone can view the original, even with limited release. I agree that there's no need for an Americanized version. It will never remain true to the story. Next you know, they'll want Angelina Jolie to play Lisbeth. Disaster!

Posted by , 4 June 2010

D. Craig is set to play Blomkvist. That would be interesting to see. But then again, as I said before. The Swede version is too good to be remeade.

Posted by Gwenh in Miami, FL , 5 June 2010

As long as Neils Oplev directs Played With Fire and Hornet's Nest, let Hollywood mess the series up however they want. I loved Dragon Tattoo with subtitles. I'll always see a foreign flick before an Americanized knockoff.

Posted by flong in Torrance, CA , 8 June 2010

Saw "TGWTDT" last weekend and thought they did a credible job with making some necessary changes to the details in the plot. Noomi Rapace was brilliant. Without knowing that an American film would be made, we speculated about who might play Lisbeth in an American version. Some might find our choice of Canadian actress Ellen Page surprising, but if you check out the film "Hard Candy" you might see why she has the intensity to play Salander.

Posted by Typeaux in Fremont, CA , 10 June 2010

I would really love to play Lisbeth, she is such a fascinating character.

Posted by Athenia Frazier in Florida , 6 July 2010

I'd say Ellen Page also for Lisbeth or an actress named Stacey farber would be good IMO. for Mikael maybe Daniel Craig.

Posted by Elizabeth in Bronnx, NY , 6 July 2010

If it does go to a remake. My feelings of the cast of Daniel Craig and Stephanie Hunt(Devin).

Posted by elcamino in Houston,Tx , 11 July 2010

Of the 4 remaining possible, I think MAYBE Sophie Lowe as Lisbeth Salander

[Emily Browning, Rooney Mara (no!), Sarah Snook and Sophie Lowe are still in the running, Portman turned it down]

Posted by l_rivers in Cottage Grove OR , 28 July 2010

Now that I am familiar with the script of the third movie, I think Hollywood might be able to improve on the Swedish works in one critical respect.

Larsson fully explored the emotions that were running through Salander?s mind, to include her mixed emotions regarding Blomqvist, and the arc of the whole relationship: love and caring in the beginning, then pain and avoidance, then reconciliation in the last scene.

The Swedish movies, unfortunately, didn?t do that. In their eagerness to fit all the necessary plot points into 2 or 2.5 hour slices, the directors erased Lisbeth?s inner emotional life, and chucked out elements which gave emotional depth to the characters and the pivotal relationship between the two leads -- which was particularly destructive since Lisbeth and Micke rarely share the screen in the second and third movies. As a result, the last scene is an anti-climax rather than a pivotal reconciliation. Without fully-developed characters, a series that could have been an extraordinary drama becomes just three really good CSI-style stories, and the two leads really have no character-development arc to portray.

It should be possible for the Hollywood folks to fully realize Salander and Blomqvist, emotionally, and follow the arc of their relationship, without going to the opposite extreme and doing the classic rom-com running-through-the-field-of-daisies suck-face finale with a thousand violins. Somewhere between 1000 violins and the muttered goodbye of the finale in the Swedish version, is a happy medium that is true to Larsson's original vision. Do the emotions, but don't drown the thing in sentiment.

Posted by hellodollyllama in Baltimore , 5 August 2010

The rumour now is they're down to two names: Emily Browning and Rooney Mara.

Posted by The Shrike in Toronto , 5 August 2010

One name. Rooney Mara.

Posted by red jet in philippines , 16 October 2010

I agree with the post about Netflix My husband and I just finished the 3rd movie using Netflix and couldn't agree more that Hollywood is going to ruin this movie and it will be a shame. The original actors are so believable! To anyone who wants to see these movies go to Netflix and you can watch it right on you computer!
